The Maine Transition Network/Committee on Transition continues into the second year of the statewide Transition Outcomes Project. For 2004-2005, 11 new school systems volunteered to participate in the project, bringing the total to 29 schools systems. With the leadership of the regional transition coordinators, new schools were recruited and six regional review teams, comprised of educators, parents, agency personnel, and administrators, were established to work with year one and year two schools.

The initial 18 school systems are in their second phase of the project. Last year, they reviewed and developed strategies to enhance transition services. This year, they are implementing those strategies, will have another review and celebrate their transition services successes.

The 11 new school systems will begin the first phase of the project this year. The review teams will review student records 14 years of age through junior year, schools will decide what improvements to make, and develop a plan with proposed strategies. Then they will move into the second phase of the project: to implement the changes to transition services identified in the first year, with a follow up review and report out on these transition service enhancements. During the project, the Maine Transition Network and the review teams are available for technical assistance to help each school system meet their goals.

The purpose of the project is to:

  • Assist local schools in meeting IDEA's transition service requirements.
  • Evaluate the effectiveness of providing and delivering transition services to students and families through the IEP process.
  • Provide training and resource materials on the transition process for educators, administrators, adult agency personnel, parents, and others.
  • Improve graduation rates and post-school outcomes of students with disabilities.
