Maine YES! Youth Exiting Schools is a post-school outcome study of Maine youth, conducted by the Maine Transition Network and the Maine Department of Education. Round one followed the 2003 student exiters from 38 school systems. Data was collected both before and up to one year after their exit from high school. Did you know that Youth in Maine who...

  • Graduated with a diploma were over 5 times more likely to be in school at follow-up than students who dropped out?
  • Had four-year college aspirations were almost 12 times more likely to be 'in school' at follow-up than students without four-year college aspirations?
  • Completed regional career/technical schools were more likely than all other youth in the study to aspire to attend a 2-yr college, vocational/technical school, or work full-time? They were also more likely to be attending a voc/tech. school and/or working full-time at follow-up?
  • Had a job in high school were 3.3 times more likely to have a job at follow-up?
  • Participated in extracurricular activities in high school were over 2 times more likely to be 'in school' at follow-up?
  • Had a driver's license were more likely to be in school, employed, and registered to vote, and that they were also more likely to have money they could decide how to spend, a savings account, a checking account, a credit card, and get together with friends more often than students without a driver's license?
Also, that Youth from Special Education who...

  • Participated in their transition planning were 2.4 times more likely to graduate with a diploma than youth who did not participate.
  • Participated in transition planning both in and outside of the PET meeting were 3.3 times more likely to graduate with a diploma than youth who did not participate.
  • Participated in their transition planning were also associated with:
    • using Vocational Rehabilitation services.
    • aspiring to attend a two year college or work full-time.
    • having a paying job while in high school.
    • participating in extracurricular activities.
    • having an idea of what he/she wanted to do after high school.
