The Committee on Transition (COT) is an interagency committee established by the Maine Legislature that supports youth with disabilities in the transition to adult life.
Mission
The Maine Committee on Transition supports youth with disabilities in making meaningful choices as they transition to adulthood by promoting collaboration within communities.
What We Do! Through our regional programs
- Provide Information and Referral
- Build capacity within school systems to use student-centered planning
- Help people make community connections
- Collaborate with a variety of stakeholders to provide ongoing identified training
- Promote Youth Leadership regionally and statewide
What is good Transition planning?
Students are actively involved in:
- Defining their Dreams
- Identifying their Strengths, Needs, Opportunities, and Worries
- Developing strategies to reach desired goals and outcomes
- Writing and implementing as action plan
- Building a portfolio of information and successes
The History of the Committee on Transition
Established When: 1986
Established How: Maine Legislation MRSA 20-A Sec. 7801 CH 308 "Transitional Services Coordination Projects for Handicapped Persons"
Official Status: Ch. 308 Sec. 7803 Interdepartmental Committee on Transition
"An Interdepartmental Committee on Transition…representing the Department of Education, the Department of Health and Human Services, the Department of Labor, the Department of Corrections, at least two of the local coordination sites and the public, must be appointed by the commissioners to establish guidelines, including continuation applications, to monitor grants and to evaluate the performance of area coordination programs developed through the grants."
Official Purpose: CH. 308 Sec. 7801 Purpose
"It is the purpose of this chapter to implement service planning and coordination for youth with handicaps 14 years of age or older and under 26 years of age, who are in transition from school to the community. Local projects have been established to provide more effective and efficient statewide delivery of services to handicapped youths in transition to the community..."
